As the beginning of school approaches, in our home we have many complaints and unwanted feelings about attending again.
Allowing these to be fully felt is important. We validate the feelings and experience.
We then moved into contemplating and visualizing what we DO want it to be like.
Without putting thought and feeling into what we WANT, we can be left hanging by the seat of our pants or anxieties.
Building a sense of awareness to how we feel, is my mission.
Naming it, diffuses it’s charge a little.
Like, ‘I feel annoyed that school routine is beginning again’.
We encourage the expression, then a choice of how long to feel this way.
We do get to decide.
This method builds independent thought/feeling along with self awareness.
After this process, we move into mind frame focus.
I ask, what would you like school to feel like?
Contemplating begins. This can take time as the ‘annoyance’ is much stronger than the desire to create something different. It took my oldest three days to be willing to answer that question. Which was given, as he was deciding how long he wanted to feel annoyed and angry.
As many coaches have put it, much of this is in your mind/body.
How you feel or what you think, creates your experience.
Providing young people with the mind frame that, YOU create what you want, is powerful.
So we discussed this at the dinner table, which is where we have all our discussions and sharing. I also left out paper and colours over the weekend, encouraging everyone to draw what they want for the fall.
-What will it feel like?
-What will it look like?
-What will you be focused on?
-What matters the most to you?
Then we create I AM’s that empower some of the answers that come to these questions. For me: 'I want FLOW in everything that I do and with everyone.'
My I AM’s may look a little like this:
I AM calmly organized.
I AM happily getting all my physical needs met.
I AM truthful and honest.
I AM relaxed in my creations.
I AM flowing with changes in my life.
Play with the words, they can be simple or long.
Invest in yourself, what DO you want? How does it FEEL? Imagine yourself there.
So often life can get the best of us and get carried away.
How do you want to feel each day and focus the energy into those directions.
By law, the Universe brings to you, that which you focus on and practice feeling and being.
When the boys show up with resistance, we gather as a family to take part in these activities. If they are not ready to move past the crumby feelings, we validate where they are and encourage a new pathway when they are ready.
It becomes exciting to witness, when they seek inside themselves for answers.
Then use their mind/heart to channel their desired state and come out with experiences of their own.
We have so many options, ask the pondering questions, to inspire creations.
They will take it away, watch and see!
